Men's Tennis Splits Opening Weekend in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- After heading to the Sunshine State to open the 2023 season, the Southern Miss men's tennis team returned to Hattiesburg with a win over Bucknell (0-2, 0-0 Patriot) and a loss to Florida Gulf Coast (2-0, 0-0 ASUN).
The Golden Eagles (1-1, 0-0 SBC) opened the weekend against Eagles in chilly conditions on Friday night. Florida Gulf Coast quickly took the doubles point as Alexander Gima/Dakotah Bobo and Saheb Sodhi/Antoine Audrain each fell 6-2 at the top doubles pairings. Shamirul Shahril and Pasawee Reansuwong went unfinished on the third court. Southern Miss fell in order in singles play, while Bobo and Taras Ignatiuk both took their Florida Gulf Coast counterpart to three sets.
Bobo took the first set via a 6-4 score over Marcelo Sepulveda before dropping the second set 6-2. The winner-take-all third set went in favor of Sepulveda, 10-5. On court six, Ignatiuk also won the first set before going on to lose the next two. The third set was 10-8 with Max Damm winning.
Against Bucknell on Sunday afternoon, Southern Miss got off to a hot start with doubles wins from Olimjon Nabiev/Antoine Audrain and Saheb Sodhi/Shamirul Shahril. Sodhi and Shahril took down the Bison's second pairing, 6-4. Audrain and Nabiev won 6-3 on court three to secure the doubles point. The Golden Eagles would go on to win four of the six singles matches after that.
Pawin Jirapoomdaje, Bobo, Nabiev and Sodhi all picked up wins. Bobo outlasted Amar Tahirovic in three sets to win the final set, 6-2. Olimjon and Sodhi both took their matches in straight sets, while Nabiev only lost one game. Jirapoomdaje, who was making his season debut, won the first and third sets in his win over Oscar Moreno de Vega.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they host Jackson State in their home opener. First serve from the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is set for 2 p.m.
