HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball looks to get back on track against Arkansas State. Tipoff against the Red Wolves is set for 6 p.m. from Reed Green Coliseum.
Last Time Out
Joye Lee-McNelis' squad dropped their first Sun Belt game of the season in a 63-54 decision against James Madison. The Dukes moved to 4-0 in conference and are now in sole possession of the top spot in the league.
Southern Miss' (10-5, 3-1 Sun Belt) seeding efforts are far from over as there are still seven weeks remaining in conference play.
Noting the Lady Eagles
Southern Miss has one of the nation's best scoring defenses, averaging 59.1 points allowed per game, coming in at 74th-best in the nation.
McNelis' squad excels on the glass, averaging 39.00 boards per game and out-rebounding opponents by an average of 5.7 rebounds per contest.
The Lady Eagles come in at 34th in the nation for offensive rebounds, averaging 14.5 O-boards per game.
Coach McNelis and the Southern Miss program are nearing a historic mark. As McNelis inches closer to 300 career wins as Southern Miss head coach, the Lady Eagle program stands to be one of six programs in the nation with two head coaches with 300 wins at the Division I level.
Kay James did so with the Lady Eagles from 1981-99, notching 335 DI wins after transitioning to the NCAA from the AIAW.
Southern Miss will join Rutgers, Duke, Maryland, Miami and James Madison as the only other programs with such a feat.
The Arkansas State Series
Dormant since 2000, the Red Wolves and Lady Eagles have met four times in their histories with the series tied at two games apiece.
Southern Miss won the first two matchups in the 1981-82 and 1982-83 seasons under Coach James. Arkansas State evened things up in the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons and currently sport a two-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 20, 1999.
Coach McNelis has never faced the Red Wolves as head coach of Southern Miss but is 2-0 against A-State from her time at Memphis. Additionally, Coach McNelis captained the 1981-82 and 1982-83 teams that bested ASU, meaning she is 4-0 on the hardwood against Arkansas State all-time.
Scouting Arkansas State
The Red Wolves (5-10, 0-4 Sun Belt) are losers of their last five games, dating back to Dec. 18 beginning against Little Rock and extending into Sun Belt play.
In their last game, A-State fell in heart-breaking fashion to App State, 59-58.
Their game in Hattiesburg is the first of a four-game road trip.
Izzy Higginbottom and Lauryn Pendleton lead the scoring efforts for ASU, averaging 14.9 and 13.9 points per game respectively. Anna Griffin leads all Red Wolves in rebounding with 132 total and an average of 8.8 per game.
Griffin is joined by Keya Patton as the only two members of the squad to start all four games of Sun Belt Conference play.
Griffin's 8.8 boards per game are the most in the Sun Belt Conference. Last Thursday, she set a new career-high with 22 points against Troy.
