HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team fired an 11-over 291 to finish seventh in the 12-team Old Town Collegiate, which completed play Tuesday afternoon.
Playing at the par 70, 6,966-yard Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C., the Golden Eagles had just one player, freshman Tommy Latter (Mississauga, Ontario), shoot an even-par 70.
Southern Miss, which held second place heading into the day, dropped five places in the final standings, as Kansas State captured the team competition with a 54-hole score of 12-under 828. Host Wake Forest finished second at 829, followed by Furman (831), Penn State (833), Rutgers (835), Cincinnati (837), and then the Golden Eagles (840).
"Golf is such a humbling game," said Southern Miss fifth-year coach Eddie Brescher. "When you think you have it all sorted out, this game will remind you how difficult it is. Yes, we are disappointed with the round we had today. But that does not define this team.
"We expect to be in the hunt many more times in the future. And in this sport, you will experience good finishes and bad finishes. The more we put ourselves in the hunt, the more we learn. That makes us a much better team."
Despite shooting a four-over 74, senior Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) finished tied for fourth in the event with a 205 total. Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added a 74 over the final round to end his event with a three-under 207 to finish in 11th place.
"It comes as no surprise to see Cameron and Thongpipat post top fifteen finishes," said Brescher. "They are both great players who do things the right way. We are proud of them for leading our team this week."
Ryan Dupuy carded a final round 73 to finish with a five-over 215 and in a 39th-place, while on the strength of his final round, Tommy Latter placed in 47th with a 219. Robbie Latter rounded out the Golden Eagles scoring with a final-round 77 to end his tournament in a 52nd-place tie with a 222.
The Golden Eagles return to action Oct. 10-11, when they travel to Corvallis, Ore., to play in the Oregon State Invitational.
