HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss women's soccer team (1-5-2, 1-1-1 Sun Belt) notched the second scoreless tie of the season over first meeting opponent James Madison (6-2-3, 2-0-1 Sun Belt) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex on Sept. 25.Â
"A good point gained against one of the strongest conference opponents. We rose to the competition. We must keep creating opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. There were promising performances from young players to move forward in our overall season goals. Each day is a new learning curve," said Assistant Coach Haley Knowles.Â
This was Southern Miss' second clean sheet of the season and first series tie against James Madison.Â
The Dukes produced their first shot of the contest within the first two minutes of the match. Midfielder Jamie Swartz shot the ball as goalkeeper Alex Helbling refused to let it get past her.
Graduate student Esmeralda Figueroa led the team offensively with three shots, all three being on target. Redshirt senior Tay Collum and freshman Sydney Magliocca also notched a shot during the match.Â
Both teams were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities as the score line held 0-0 for the break and final.Â
James Madison outshot Southern Miss in the contest. The Dukes totaled two shots in the first half and six in the second.Â
Helbling recorded her second shutout of the season with six saves between the sticks for the final. The Colorado native totaled six saves facing, eight shots, and earned all 90 minutes of play.
