HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The Southern Miss women's soccer team heads to Huntingdon, W.Va for the first Sun Belt showdown of the season against Marshall at the Hoops Family Field Saturday, Sep. 17.
Last Time on the Pitch
The Black & Gold found their first clean sheet of the season and first scoreless tie against Ole Miss Sunday, Sept. 11.
Midfielder Ryan Smith produced a scoring opportunity at 3:47 and fired the ball out left.
Ole Miss managed to outshoot the Golden Eagles 9-1 in the first but were unable to get on the board. The two teams exited the period 0-0.
There was no goal action in the second stanza, with the Rebels 13-0 shots and 7-0 corner kicks; goalkeeper Alex Helbling was forced to come up with four saves. The score line remained 0-0.

Midfielder Ryan Smith received the opening goal off a header when Samantha Stiglmair whipped in a corner kick. Smith played a hand in the Black & Gold's second score with her assist to forward Blessing Kingsley at 9:30. Marshall was awarded a penalty kick in the 24th minute and successfully netted the ball. Defender Nolubabalo Sishuba provided a low crossing ball to Mia Sadler, who headed it home. Sadler then assisted Ember Temple before she slotted the ball into the top right corner.
With a minute left in the opening, the Herd scored its second and final goal of the match. The score line remained 4-2 for the day. The Golden Eagles dished out a pair of assists for four points on the night.
The Opponent
Head Coach Michael Swan leads the Herd for his third season. He spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Charlotte. With his help, the 49ers captured the 2016 Conference USA Championship and were finalists at the 2017 C-USA Tournament. He served as head women's soccer coach at Catawba for five years. Swan coached the 2010 SAC Freshman of the Year, 13 all-conference players, and led the program to a 13-win season in 2012.
Marshall currently holds a 1-4-2 record after losing 2-1 to the Miami Redhawks Sunday, Sept. 11.
