Football Returns Home to Face Northwestern State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss renews an old rivalry this weekend when they meet Northwestern State in a 6 p.m., contest, Saturday, Sept. 17, at The Rock.
The game can be seen via webstream at ESPN3 as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield.
The Golden Eagles vie for their first victory of the year after a four-overtime setback in the opener against Liberty, before falling at nationally ranked Miami last weekend.
Northwestern State enters play having dropped both its games, losing to FCS No. 2 Montana 47-0 on the road in the opener and falling 47-21 to Grambling State at Independence Stadium in Shreveport last weekend.
Freshman quarterback Zach Wilcke, who threw for 207 yards on 16-of-27 attempts with a touchdown and an interception in his first career action at Miami, will get the starting nod for the Golden Eagles versus the Demons.
Joining Wilcke on offense for the Golden Eagles is running back Frank Gore, Jr., who has posted 188 rushing yards over the first two contests and leads the team with 201 all-purpose yards. At receiver, Jason Brownlee tallied his sixth career 100-yard game for receiving yards with 102 on five catches, including a 32-yard touchdown grab, versus the Hurricanes.
On defense, Malik Shorts paced the Golden Eagles during the early going with 25 tackles, after leading the squad for the second straight week with 13 stops versus Miami. He also added his second interception of the year, which leads the team.
Jalen Williams has led the defensive front with 10 stops over the first two games which includes 1 ½ tackles for loss. Southern Miss is averaging nine tackles for loss and three sacks per game to start the 2022 season.
The Golden Eagles and Demons are tied 11-11 in this series which dates to 1930, but Southern Miss has won the last two meetings and eight of the last nine dating back to 1947. The Demons won 10 of the first 13 meetings.
The only loss during this current stretch was a 22-0 setback at The Rock in 1984. Southern Miss won the last game between the schools, 40-6, during the 1999 campaign.
Following the Northwestern State game, the Golden Eagles return to the road next Saturday for their final non-conference tilt at Tulane. Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Yulman Stadium.
