OXFORD, Miss.—The Southern Miss women's soccer team broke even with No. 9 Ole Miss Sunday, Sept. 11, with the Black & Gold's first scoreless tie of the season.
"It is great to see this group battle against nationally ranked opponents and to tie against a solid #9 Ole Miss, that is year in and year out in the top 25 while representing Mississippi so well. It feels great. We know what we wanted from the non-conference schedule; improvements and speed the learning curve in a young group.
Props to these ladies for their mentality through adversity. Great result and on to conference play with plenty of lessons learned," said Assistant Coach J.P. Valadares
This was Southern Miss' first clean sheet of the season and first series tie against Ole Miss.
There was no goal action in the first half as midfielder Ryan Smith produced a scoring opportunity at 3:47 and fired the ball out left as the score would hold 0-0.
The Black & Gold were outshot by the Rebels 9-1 in the opening half.
The Rebels found opportunities in the second stanza but were unable to capitalize.
Ole Miss dominated the second stanza leading 13-0 in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks as goalkeeper Alex Helbling came up with four saves to keep the Rebels off the scoreboard.
The Highlands Ranch, Colorado native, recorded her first clean sheet of the season with six saves.
The Golden Eagles have prepared all off-season and are ready for Sun Belt play.
Looking Ahead
The Black & Gold head to Huntington, W.Va., for the first Sun Belt conference matchup of the season against Marshall Saturday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m.
