PERKINSTON, Miss. — Southern Miss dominated its exhibition match against Mississippi Gulf Coast with incredible efforts from freshmen Grace Gilmore and Emily Welch in a 9-0 win.
"It was a good start for our season. We were in a position where our younger players were able to contribute and this experience was valuable to us and for us. I am grateful that MGCCC allowed us to play this match. As we head into our season this competition helped us be better prepared. I thank them for this opportunity," said head coach Mohammed El-Zare.
The Golden Eagles were led by the Mississippi native Esmeralda Figueroa as she netted the ball in the first ten minutes of the game. Welch increased the lead as the Bulldogs fought hard to score before the end of the first half but fell short.
Following the first half Southern Miss freshmen Gilmore and Welch found themselves with two goals each.
The Black and Gold pushed on as they maintained their lead and refused to let Mississippi Gulf Coast Score down to the last minute of competition.
