HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ole Miss exploded for seven runs on five hits in the sixth inning to propel the Rebels to a 10-0 Hattiesburg Super Regional game one victory over No. 11 national seed Southern Miss Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (47-18) saw a three-game winning streak snapped as they dropped their first-ever home super regional contest. The Rebels (36-22) won their fourth-straight game to start NCAA play.
"Ole Miss played a much better game than we did, all the way around," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "We just didn't do enough in any phase of the game today to compete with a good team like they are, especially with the roll they've been on. We knew trying to navigate through their hitters was going to be just like LSU. They're tough outs in there, and certainly they proved that today. But, I think the bottom line is the first four innings, we had opportunities to get momentum and punch back when they were up 3-0 and at least score one run and get back on the board. When you miss on opportunities to get momentum, you actually give momentum, and I felt like that's exactly what happened."
Despite striking out an NCAA school record 12 batters over five-plus innings, Golden Eagle starter Hurston Waldrep gave up a pair of runs in the third on an RBI Tim Elko single and a sacrifice fly by Kemp Alderman, while also surrendering a RBI double just inside the first-base bag to Garrett Wood over the next inning.
Down 3-0, the Golden Eagles used their best offensive spurt of the game in the fifth. Rodrigo Montenegro walked with two outs. Carson Paetow followed with a walk of his own and Dustin Dickerson added an infield single off Ole Miss starter Dylan Delucia.
Reece Ewing then tried to give Southern Miss the advantage on a ball belted down the rightfield line that curled right in front of the fair pole. A subsequent replay called by the umpire crew chief confirmed the call on the field and Ewing fanned one pitch later.
"It would've been nice to get the home run, but a foul ball is a foul ball and I knew it was foul," said Berry. "I could see it going on the other side of the foul pole but of course I'm going to challenge that. It ended up not costing me a challenge. The crew chief, that was his challenge on it, and they got the call right. Certainly, that would've been a big moment for us, it would've been 4-3 if it would have stayed fair. But a foul ball is a foul ball. We were going to have to get a two-out hit or something there anyway in that situation."
The Rebels then exploded for seven runs the next frame as Justin Bench start things by being hit by a pitch to knock in a run with the bases loaded. Jacob Gonzalez then singled in a run before Elko and Graham both collected two-run doubles. Hayden Dunhurst completed the scoring with an RBI single to right.
Waldrep, who only pitched to the first two hitters of the sixth, suffered the loss and fell to 6-2 on the year after giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks with his 12 strikeouts.
Delucia threw 5 2/3 scoreless frames, giving up four hits and two walks with nine strikeouts to get the win and improve to 6-2. Jack Dougherty then threw the final 3 1/3 which included a strikeout to garner his second save of the year.
Game two of the best of three series takes place Sunday, at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU and can also be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network.
