MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Three Golden Eagle pitchers limited Middle Tennessee to just three hits and No. 17 Southern Miss completed a three-game Conference USA sweep of the Blue Raiders with a 10-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Golden Eagles (41-14 overall, 23-7 C-USA) won the 24th-straight game over the Blue Raiders (29-24, 17-13) as they outscored MT 36-4 in the series.
Hurston Waldrep limited MT to just two hits over six innings with no walks and 10 strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 6-1 on the year. Dalton Rogers added two shutout innings and allowed a hit with a walk and two strikeouts, while Landon Harper retired all three of his batters in the ninth – including two strikeouts – to finish the contest.
Southern Miss pitching did not allow a run over the final 22 innings as they registered their fifth shutout of the year in the regular-season finale. With 14 strikeouts, the Golden Eagles added 40th game with 10 or more strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles jumped out in front with a solo run in the second. Christopher Sargent opened the frame with a double off the center field wall. After a groundout by Slade Wilks to get Sargent to third, Danny Lynch knocked him in with a sacrifice fly.
Southern Miss added three more runs in the fifth. Lynch opened the frame with a single. After a walk to Will McGillis, Carson Paetow reached on a fielder's choice. The relay throw to attempt to get Paetow was wild and Lynch scored on a Blue Raider error. Paetow scored later in the frame on a double by Gabe Montenegro, before Dickerson drove home Montenegro with a single of his own.
The lead was extended to 7-0 in the sixth with three more runs in the frame. After a leadoff walk by Sargent, and a single by Lynch, Will McGillis blasted a one-out, three-run homer to left for his 15th of the year.
Sargent then added a solo home run in the seventh off the scoreboard in right center for his 20th of the year. The homer ties Sargent for ninth on the school's single-season chart for homers, tying him with B.A. Vollmuth (2010) and Sedgwick McCollum (1988).
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the ninth as Lynch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run while McGillis completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
MT starter James Sells suffered the loss by giving up fur runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings with three walks and four strikeouts to fall to 4-3.
The Golden Eagles open the postseason Wednesday, May 25, when they open The First Conference USA Championship with UAB at 4 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in the double elimination tournament.
