Strong Pitching Leads Southern Miss to Series Win with Saturday victory at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE – Graduate transfer Hunter Riggins had a no-hitter through five innings and limited Charlotte to a pair of unearned runs over 6 2/3 innings as No. 18 Southern Miss defeated the 49ers 8-2 Saturday afternoon at Hayes Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (22-8 overall, 9-2 C-USA) clinched their fourth-straight Conference USA series to open league play and look to sweep the 49ers (17-13, 4-7) in the final game of the series, Sunday, slated for 12 p.m. CT.
Behind Riggins, the Golden Eagles won their 12th games over the last 14 contests.
The right-handed hurler surrendered just a hit by pitch and a walk through the first five innings and finally gave up a leadoff single in the sixth and a two-out double but fanned three in the frame to get out of trouble.
He started the seventh with a popup back to himself before a runner reached on a throwing error by Danny Lynch at third. After a single and a strikeout, the 49ers got back-to-back RBI singles from Kaden Hopson and Drew Tyndall which ended Riggins day.
Ben Ethridge then came in and got a strikeout to end the inning.
Riggins (4-2) allowed two unearned runs on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts to earn the victory. While Ethridge did not collect a save, his efforts were strong in relief in throwing the final 2 1/3 innings. He gave up one single, but immediately retired the runner on the Golden Eagles' second double play turned in the game to end the eighth. Ethridge retired the 49ers in order in the ninth and he ended with three strikeouts in his performance.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles jumped out in front with a solo home run to left field in the fourth for his ninth of the year.
The Golden Eagles then added three runs in each of the next two innings.
In the fifth, the Golden Eagles bunched together four doubles from Lynch, Gabe Montenegro, Blake Johnson and Carson Paetow with the last three each driving in a run.
Charlotte then walked in three runs in the sixth, giving Johnson, Paetow and Dickerson RBI walks, as the 49ers gave up one hit, three walks and hit two batters in the frame.
Southern Miss then added an insurance run in the ninth on a Slade Wilks RBI single.
Of the 10 Golden Eagle hits, six were for extra bases including five doubles and a home run.
