HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Hurston Waldrep and Dalton Rogers limited Louisiana Tech to one hit as Southern Miss captured an 8-0 Conference USA series-clinching victory Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
With the win, the Golden Eagles (19-8 overall, 7-2 C-USA) took over sole possession of first place in the league standings while racking up its third shutout of the year.
"We talked in the pregame about the expectations of this program," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "Today was all about the sole rights of first place between two good teams and good programs. Our program has a rich tradition and is built on consistency. It's our job to go out there and be accountable for the expectations that are placed on us. That was the challenge today, to do just that and get the momentum back in our favor.
"We had it on Friday and LA Tech took it away from us yesterday. Certainly, they had it coming in to today. Our guys responded well in all phases of the game."
Waldrep gave up a single and three walks for the Bulldogs' (19-9, 6-3) only base runners in the contest. He also fanned 10 – his third-straight start with 10 or more strikeouts – over seven innings to earn the victory and improve to 3-1. Dalton Rogers retired the final six hitters, three via strikeout, to close out the contest.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead as Bulldog starter Jordan Whorff had trouble locating his pitches and walked two of the first four hitters. Slade Wilks then put Southern Miss on the board with an RBI single through the right side.
Southern Miss added two more runs in the second. After both Brady Faust and Rodrigo Montenegro reached on a single, Faust scored on a wild pitch and Carson Paetow homered to right, his sixth, to give the home squad a 4-0 advantage.
That homer chased Whorff from the game as he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over 1 1/3 frames to suffer the loss and fall to 2-4.
Southern Miss finished its scoring in the seventh inning with four more runs. Will McGillis led off the inning with a single. After a sacrifice by Faust who was inserted into Sunday's starting lineup for Gabe Montenegro after Montenegro was hit by a pitch on Saturday, McGillis scored on a single by Rodrigo Montenegro down the third-base line.
After a walk to Paetow and a strikeout, Reece Ewing hit a three-run homer to right-center field capping the inning's scoring.
Rodrigo Montenegro led the eight-hit Golden Eagle offensive attack with a pair of singles.
The Golden Eagles, who play eight of their next nine games away from Pete Taylor Park, will be the designated visitor Tuesday night against Ole Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
