Southern Miss Travels to the Rocket City for the Inaugural C-USA Tournament

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Beach Volleyball makes its Conference USA Tournament debut to open the 2022 postseason at Huntsville's John Hunt Sand Volleyball Complex.

The Golden Eagles (11-24, 1-3 C-USA) travel to Huntsville, Ala. for the inaugural C-USA Beach Volleyball Championships, co-hosted by the CCSA and C-USA.

Southern Miss, having earned the No. 6 seed for the tournament, faces off against No. 3 seed Georgia State to open the tournament on Thursday, April 28 at Noon CT.

The Panthers, ranked 15th by the AVCA Poll, enter 22-11 (5-3 C-USA) and fresh off of a defeat of C-USA member Coastal Carolina.

Georgia State boasts seven wins over opponents ranked by the AVCA including No. 6 LSU, No. 16 Pepperdine, No. 18 Stetson twice, No. 19 South Carolina twice and No. 20 Florida Gulf Coast.

The Atlanta-based Panthers have also defeated (4) UAB twice and (5) Coastal Carolina thrice while falling to (2) FIU and (1) Florida Atlantic to wind up with the third overall seed.

The match between Southern Miss and Georgia State is set for Noon.

Tournament Overview
The 2022 C-USA Tournament is a double-elimination format, meaning each team must lose once in the winner's bracket and once in the elimination bracket to be fully eliminated from the tournament.

(1) Florida Atlantic received a first-round bye and will face the winner of (4) UAB and (5) Coastal Carolina.

(6) Southern Miss' exact path is yet to be determined as the result of the match against (3) Georgia State could have the Golden Eagles playing on different days.

Golden Eagle Victory
If Southern Miss upsets the (3) Panthers, the Golden Eagles stay in Huntsville and await a 3 p.m. match against the winner of (2) FIU and (7) ULM.

If Southern Miss defeats either (2) FIU or (7) ULM, they will advance to the third round of the winner's bracket, facing either (1) Florida Atlantic, (4) UAB or (5) Coastal Carolina on Friday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m.

A defeat at the hands of (2) FIU or (7) ULM would mean relegation to the elimination bracket and a Friday, April 29 matchup schedule for 10:30 a.m. In this match, the Golden Eagles would face the loser between (4) UAB and (5) Coastal Carolina.

Golden Eagle Defeat
If Southern Miss falls to (3) Georgia State on the first day of the tournament, they will receive the rest of the day off, returning the next morning.

The elimination bracket match would begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 29 against the loser of the match between (2) FIU and (7) ULM.

If the Golden Eagles defeat either the Panthers or Warhawks, they would return to action at Noon against either (1) Florida Atlantic, (4) UAB or (5) Coastal Carolina.

A victory against any of those opponents would mean a 3 p.m. match to close out Friday.
