The Golden Eagles (28-8) won for the 10th-straight time, giving Scott Berry his fourth winning streak of at least 10 games since taking over the program during the 2010 campaign. The team also won a nation's leading 11th road game as they finished a string of eight of nine games away from home.
Southern Miss banged out 12 hits as they scored eight runs over the final three innings to put the Green Wave (24-13-1) away.
Four Golden Eagle pitchers combined for 17 Green Wave strikeouts as the program now has 10 or more strikeouts in 26 games in 2022. The visitors got a solid four innings from starter Ben Ethridge as he allowed a run on four hits and two walks with a season-high tying seven strikeouts.
Drew Boyd came in for Ethridge to start the fifth and went 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and posted four strikeouts to get the victory and hold a 1-0 record.
Isaiah Rhodes came in for Boyd in the fifth with the bases loaded and got a strikeout to end the inning. After Rhodes gave up three runs in the next frame, Landon Harper thew the final 2 2/3 giving up a run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts to finish the contest.
The Green Wave jumped out in front on Ethridge with a solo run in the second. After back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners, Brady Hebert hit a slow roller to second to knock in the run.
That lead held up until the fifth when the Golden Eagles were beneficiaries of a hit by pitch and four walks from Tulane pitching. After a couple of fly outs, Blake Johnson was hit by a pitch. Carson Paetow then drew a walk before Dustin Dickerson doubled to left center to knock in Johnson and tie the game.
The Golden Eagles then drew three consecutive walks which turned into RBIs for both Christopher Sargent and Slade Wilks to give USM a 3-1 lead.
Southern Miss then took advantage of three walks in a four-run seventh as Danny Lynch pasted a two-run double in right-center. Lynch later scored on a wild pitch before Will McGillis, who walked, scored on a Gabe Montenegro sacrifice fly.
The home squad tried to get back in the game with three runs in its half of the seventh. Ethan Groff led off the inning with a home run to left field, before adding another run on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Linn and a run-scoring single by Chase Engelhard to cut the gap to 7-4.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the eighth. Paetow led off the frame with a double and Dickerson added a single. Reece Ewing then singled through the infield and plating Paetow. The throw to gun Dickerson at third base was off the mark and allowed Dickerson to score.
Montenegro then knocked in a run with a single in the ninth and later scored on a Dickerson sacrifice fly to end the Eagles' scoring.
Tulane plated a lone run in the ninth to close the gap on an RBI double.
The Green Wave used 10 pitchers who combined to give up nine walks of which four scored in the contest. Tyler Hoffman, the second reliever for Tulane, suffered the loss by allowing three runs on a hit with two walks over two-thirds of an inning to suffer the loss and fall to 1-4.
The Golden Eagles return to action, Wednesday, when they entertain New Orleans at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 6 p.m.
