HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Fresh off the heels of its highest ever national ranking and on the final leg of a current long road stretch, the No. 6 Southern Miss baseball team travels to New Orleans Tuesday for a midweek date with Tulane at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (27-8 overall) enter the game having won nine-straight contests, 14 of the last 15 and 17 of the last 19 games, while also currently enjoying the nation's longest road winning streak of 10 contests.
The program went 4-0 last week and jumped significantly in every major national poll including its No. 6 ranking by D1Baseball.com. The No. 6 showing is the highest-ever ranking by that specific outlet – the previous best was No. 10 – and the highest ever previous ranking for the program came at No. 8. That No. 8 ranking ended the 2009 season and Collegiate Baseball, the USA Today/Coaches and NCBWA polls all had them at that number. Collegiate Baseball later had the program at No. 8 on May 28, 2018, heading into the regionals that year.
The Tulane game marks the final contest of a string that has seen the team play eight of nine games away from Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles are 8-0 on this stretch which includes a three-game sweep at FIU last weekend.
Southern Miss plays a Tulane club that comes into the contest with a 24-12-1 record, having dropped two of three at Houston last week.
This will be the second meeting between the squads as the Golden Eagles registered a 7-2 victory in the first meeting between the two since 2018 earlier this season in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles make their first trip to Greer Field since a 12-3 triumph there on March 14, 2018.
Leadoff hitter Carson Paetow heads into the Tulane game with the team's longest hitting streak at six games. He is batting .379 over this stretch (11-for-29) with four doubles, a home run and eight RBI. He hit a home run in the series finale at FIU last Saturday.
Shortstop Dustin Dickerson continues to lead the squad in hitting overall, batting .343 with 12 doubles and 20 RBI. Slade Wilks ranks next at .318 with 14 doubles, a triple and eight homers with 27 RBI.
The Golden Eagles look to send right-hander Ben Ethridge (1-3, 4.55 ERA) to the mound against the Green Wave. Tulane will counter with freshman right-handed hurler Chandler Welch (4-0, 4.61 ERA).
Following the Tulane contest, Southern Miss returns home for the first of four consecutive home games when they take on New Orleans in a 6 p.m., contest, Wednesday, April 20.
