HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team returns to action Monday and Tuesday when they compete in the Mossy Oak Collegiate at the par 72, 7,212-yard Mossy Oak Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
"Our team is familiar with Mossy Oak," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "We played some qualifying rounds on this course in the fall in preparation for this event. The course is a links style that is unlike anything else in the South. Creativity is a premium on this course as there are many ways to play it."
The Golden Eagles will go with the lineup of seniors Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) and Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.), sophomores Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand), along with freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.).
"This is an elite national field," said Brescher. "An amazing opportunity for our guys to compete against some quality school and pick up some quality wins. Given our current national ranking, we are looking at this event as an opportunity to beat some teams and make a big jump in the national rankings. Our goal remains the same, take it one shot at a time and let the cards fall where they may."
The entire 19-team field ranks among the top 117 ranked programs currently listed in the latest GolfWeek.Com men's collegiate team rankings. Five teams are ranked in the Top 25 and a total of six teams in the Top 50.
The Golden Eagles enter the event ranked No. 75 and will be joined by No. 5 Vanderbilt, No. 15 Auburn, No. 19 Florida State, No. 21 LSU, No. 24 Ole Miss, No. 46 UAB, No. 64 and host Mississippi State, along with Arkansas State, Chattanooga, Kansas State, Lipscomb, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Michigan, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama and ULM.
The tournament format will be 36 continuous holes on Monday at 8 a.m., in a shotgun start with tee times slated starting at 8 a.m., on Tuesday.
