HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) shot a one-under 71 and senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) fired an even par 72 over the final round Tuesday at the Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point, Miss., to lead Southern Miss to a 17th-place showing.
"Clearly, this is not where we wanted to finish on the leaderboard," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Simply put, this was not our week. On the positive side, our guys bounced back with solid rounds in the second and third rounds. We know what is required going forward as we shift our focus to the conference championship."
Senior and West Point native Hunter Atkins fired a final round 76 to finish with a 220-stroke total to hold the highest Golden Eagle individual finish in the event with a 46th-place tie.
Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) added a final-round 73 to finish in a 54th-place tie with Wilkinson, who both tallied a 221-stroke total.
Rattanayanon used his final round to finish with a 227 and a 78th-place tie, while freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) carded a 75 over his final round for a 231 and an 89th-place tie.
Vanderbilt won the team title with a 25-under 839, followed by Auburn (851) and LSU (854). The Golden Eagles shot a 291 over its final round, after completing its second round with a one-over 289 to finish with an 887 total.
The Golden Eagles return to action for their final regular season competition, Sunday, April 17, with a Match Play event at Bayou DeSiard in Monroe, La., and will also include ULM, Little Rock and Louisiana Tech. The Golden Eagles will play a match play round in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
