Beach Volleyball Finishes the First Day of the Beach Invitational 3-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Wins, great weather and good times abounded at the Southern Miss Beach Volleyball Complex today as the Golden Eagles won three duals in three tries in the first day of the Southern Miss Beach Invitational.
"It was great to earn three wins on the day," said Southern Miss head coach Shawn Taylor. "It has been a while since we have been in that position, and I thought we got better as the day went on. It is great to be at home and the fan presence was awesome. It was also nice to get several players that have been working hard into the mix. We have a big day tomorrow and are hoping to close out the weekend playing well."
Southern Miss 5, Nicholls 0
The Black & Gold opened the day at 2:30 p.m. against Nicholls. Southern Miss previously faced the Colonels at the Tulane Classic on March 12, taking the dual 5-0. This meeting between the two squads would be more of the same, as the Golden Eagles enjoyed a quick 5-0 victory.
Leading the charge in the first wave of the day was Melanie Miller and Dylan Russell in the exhibition dual of the match. The pairing took both sets easily by scores of 21-6 and 21-7.
The fifth flight pair of Carmen Sanchez Delgado and Reagan Sandlin followed up with the first points of the day for the Golden Eagles. Sanchez Delgado/Sandlin took both sets 21-9, 21-11.
No. 4 pairing Taylor Pierce and Kaylie Beck notched the second Golden Eagle point of the afternoon after two victorious sets. The pair took the first set 21-15 and followed up with a 21-16 second set victory.
At the conclusion of the first wave, Southern Miss lead 2-0 over the Colonels. Flights one, two and three would take the sand for the second wave of matches.
Olivia Hepworth and Hallie Phelan took court three at the third position and won both sets 21-14 over the Colonels. The pair's victory pushed the score to 3-0 and clinched the dual for the Golden Eagles.
Second flight pair Vanessa Hurnikova and Kellie Garraway took the fourth point of the dual against after 21-6 and 21-16 victories.
Breleigh Favre and Aleksandra Chudzik finished off the Colonels from Thibodaux with a two-set victory at Flight No. 1. The pair took the sets 21-9 and 21-15, respectively.
The Golden Eagles moved to 4-17 on the year and the Colonels fell to 0-18. Southern Miss would remain on the sand to take on the Chattanooga Mocs immediately after.

Southern Miss would keep the same lineups at flights one, two, three and five.
Valeria Siakidou Papakriakou and Kai Norman would return to the fourth position and the sixth flight would be filled by Wiio Meinheit and Madison Cassidy.
Meinheit / Cassidy would take the exhibition matches 21-17 and 21-16.
The pair would be followed quickly by Siakidou Papakyriakou / Norman as they picked up the Golden Eagles first point of the dual.
Fifth pair Sanchez Delgado / Sandlin would drop their match in three hard-fought sets by scores of 21-19, 18-21 and 9-15.
Favre / Chudzik would fall in three sets to the Mocs after taking the first 21-16. The pair would drop the second, 22-20, before falling 13-15 in the rubber set.
Southern Miss would take the rest of the matches thanks to outstanding performances from Hurnikova / Garraway and Phelan / Hepworth.
Hurnikova / Garraway took both their sets 21-14 as Phelan / Garraway worked for a three set victory to clinch the day for the Golden Eagles by scores of 20-22, 21-12 and 15-10.
Southern Miss 5, Huntingdon 0
Southern Miss would make quick work of the Hawks, winning all matches in straight sets.
At the first position, Favre / Chudzik won 21-8 and 21-9. Second pair Hepworth / Phelan saw a 21-13 and 21-11.
Siakidou Papakyriakou / Norman moved to the third position for a 21-15, 21-11 drubbing.
Taylor Pierce and Kaylie Beck took the sands as the fourth position to the tune of two 21-15 victories.
Miller / Russell moved to the fifth position and took both sets, 21-13 and 21-12.
The exhibition was the same as the previous match as Meinheit / Cassidy took both sets 21-15 and 21-6.

Southern Miss Beach Volleyball returns to the Beach Volleyball Complex tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. against Spring Hill. The Golden Eagles close out the tournament against Texas A&M – Kingsville immediately after at 4:30 p.m.
