CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Offensive woes and turnovers were too much to overcome, as the Lady Eagles fell 70-49 to Charlotte at Halton Arena on Saturday afternoon.
"We have to focus on the next moment," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said following the loss. "I think our players and staff have to reflect and take some ownership before we head to Frisco."
Seniors Daishai Almond and Kelsey Jones both finished in double-figures with 11 points each to pace the Lady Eagles, while Jones also led the squad with seven rebounds. For Almond, it marked her third-straight game in double-figures.
Jones connected on the first field goal of the game to put the Lady Eagles up early, but the 49ers answered with a 7-0 run to force McNelis into her first timeout of the contest. The scoring drought continued for the majority of the quarter, as the Lady Eagles started the game 1-of-10 from the floor and were held without a field-goal over the last 8:17 of the opening quarter to trail 13-2 after ten minutes of action.
Domonique Davis and Destiny Smith provided a small spark for the offense in the second period with the pair combining for 11 of the Lady Eagles 13 points in the frame. For Smith, all five of her points came at the charity stripe, as the McComb, Miss. native found success driving to the basket and drawing contact. Southern Miss had cut the 49ers lead to 12, before Dazia Lawrence connected on her third 3 of the opening half at the buzzer to give Charlotte a 30-15 lead at the half.
Daishai Almond connected on USM's first 3 of the contest to cut the Niner advantage back to 15 midway through the third quarter. Fess Hawkins hit her first bucket of the game at the top of the key to cut the lead down to 12 on Almond's 95th assist of the year, and would later put the Lady Eagles within single digits for the first time since the opening quarter with an offensive rebound and putback. However, Charlotte answered with a 6-0 run over the final 1:18 to keep their lead at 15 going into the fourth.
Charlotte continued to stretch their lead in the final 10 minutes of play to clinch their first regular season Conference USA title since 2003.
Southern Miss now awaits the winner of FAU and FIU on Wednesday in Frisco as the No. 3 seed in the west division. Tipoff from the Ford center is set for 2 p.m. CT.
