Southern Miss set to face FIU in second round of C-USA Tournament

FRISCO, Texas – Southern Miss women's basketball opens their time at the 2022 Conference USA basketball tournament against the FIU Panthers on Wednesday afternoon. Tipoff from the Ford Center is set for 2 p.m. CT.
Scouting the Panthers…
• Head Coach Jesyka Burks-Wiley is in her 2nd season leading the Panthers and enters the second round at 15-15 this season.
• Emerald Ekpiteta and Ariel Colón both eclipsed the thousand career-point mark this season, sitting at 1,058 and 1,029 points.
• Sharpshooting forward Kyla Nelson averaged 2.38 treys per game, which ranked second overall in C-USA this season. The sharpshooting Panther led FIU in made 3-pointers (69) and 3-point shooting percentage (.347). Nelson's 12.3 points per game also ranked No. 18 overall in C-USA and second on FIU. • Colón led the Panthers in scoring with 12.4 points per game, which ranked 17th overall in C-USA. Colón also grabbed four rebounds per contest and sank 34 attempts from beyond the arc, both of which ranked second-best on the squad

• Keep USM alive in the C-USA tournament.
• Break a four-game skid in Frisco.
• Give the Lady Eagles their first win in the Conference USA tournament since making the finals in 2016-17.
Southern Miss – FIU Series
• A buzzer-beating jumper from junior guard Domonique Davis propelled the Southern Miss Lady Eagles past the FIU Panthers by a score of 65-64 in their only meeting this season.
• The two teams met for the first time at the C-USA a tournament ago with FIU picking up a 10-point victory.
• The Black and Gold had outlasted the Panthers in the previous two neutral site meetings, prior to dropping last year's game.
Last Meeting: Feb. 3, 2022 – USM 65 - FIU 64
• Davis secured her 11th straight double-digit scoring performance for the Lady Eagles. Brikayla Gray and Melyia Grayson joined Davis in double-figures, with 12 and 11 points. Gray's team-leading eight rebounds matched a career high for the sophomore guard, while Davis dished out at least five assists for the ninth time this season.
• With FIU holding a 63-60 lead with just under two minutes remaining, Davis netted a three-pointer to tie the contest and capped off her 15-point performance with the gamedeciding bucket with under a second left.
