HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team will close out its current five-match homestand and look to win its fifth consecutive match on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Alcorn State (3-9, 2-2 SWAC). First serve from the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission is free.
"It's been great to get a few wins at home before we hit the road next week and we're in a good spot to get another one tomorrow," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "Alcorn State is a good team that we have a lot of respect for and I'm looking forward to a good match."
The Golden Eagles (8-7, 0-2 C-USA) are coming off a dominant Sunday showing in which they didn't drop a single set in a pair of 7-0 wins against Mississippi Valley State. They initially opened the homestand with a 5-2 win against Nicholls on Thursday, then added a 6-1 win against Jackson State on Saturday afternoon.
Shamirul Shahril leads Southern Miss with eight wins, including a five-match winning streak dating back to March 17. Two of Shahril's wins in that stretch came at the top singles spot. Olimjon Nabiev and Antoine Audrain each have seven wins, while Nabiev is 7-2 with most of his time spent on court three. As a team, Southern Miss' best showing has been the No. 2 singles position. Audrain, Nabiev, Shahril and Dhruv Sunish have combing to go 9-4 on court two.
