HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team notched its second consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 6-1 win against Jackson State (7-7, 3-1 SWAC). The Golden Eagles (6-7, 0-2 C-USA) moved its record at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex to 4-3 on the season.
"We executed well today against a quality team," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "Our three guys that won at singles have been playing really well and I was happy to see them continue that. We have a quick turnaround into tomorrow and we'll have to come ready to play against MVSU."
Southern Miss benefited from a shorthanded Jackson State roster to get points at the fifth and sixth singles position before the match even started. It also picked up a crucial win in doubles play after Shamirul Shahril and Antoine Audrain clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at the second position. Alexander Gima and Pawin Jirapoomdaje won by default at the third spot due to the Tigers not having enough players. Pasawee Reansuwong and Dhruv Sunish fell at the top spot, 6-4.
Shahril extended his singles winning streak to four-straight matches after cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win against Richy Gamo on court two. Sunish picked up another win on court one with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Francisco Vargas. Sunish has now won two in a row and has five wins on the season.
Christopher Cahour came from behind to win the last two sets of his match to pick up his fourth win in as many tries. Cahour won the final two sets by a 6-0, 12-10 score. It was his fifth win this season, while Shahril has a team-leading seven wins.
The Golden Eagles will host Mississippi Valley State on Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission to the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is free.
