Men's Tennis Welcomes Jackson State and MVSU to Town This Weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Just days removed from picking up a big win at home, the Southern Miss (5-7, 0-2 C-USA) men's tennis team will continue its homestand when it welcomes Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State to town this weekend. The Golden Eagles will host the Tigers (5-5, 3-1 SWAC) on Saturday and then the Delta Devils (0-10, 0-3 SWAC) on Sunday. Both matches will be a 2 p.m. first serve and admission to the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is free.
"We are coming down the final stretch and every match is crucial to us at this point," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We have a chance to pick up a pair of big wins that would give us some momentum going into Tuesday and then into our trip to Boca Raton next weekend."
The Golden Eagles opened their home stint with a 5-2 win against Nicholls on Thursday afternoon. They jumped ahead early with wins at doubles from Dhruv Sunish/Pasawee Reansuwong and Alan Sanson/Shamirul Shahril. Shahril and Sunish added wins in singles play to put the Black and Gold in the driver's seat. Olimjon Nabiev and Christopher Cahour picked up singles win as well -- it was Cahour's fourth win of the season and Nabiev's fifth.
Scouting the Tigers
- Jackson State sports a 5-5 record and has won its last three matches. Those wins came against Alcorn State, North Carolina Central and MVSU.Â
- Jacksonville State, who Southern Miss beat 4-1, defeated Jackson State via a 5-2 score.Â
- The Tigers host Dillard this afternoon before heading to Hattiesburg.
- Southern Miss has won the last eight meetings against Jackson State dating back to 2010.Â
- The Golden Eagles haven't allowed a point to the Tigers since a 6-1 Southern Miss win in 2015.Â
Scouting the Delta DevilsÂ
- MVSU has lost all 10 of its matches this season, includiing three to Nicholls.Â
- The Delta Devils most recent match was a 6-0 loss to Prairie View A&M on March 13.Â
- Southern Miss has never lost to MVSU in men's tennis.Â
- The Golden Eagles cruised to a 4-0 win in 2020 and has never dropped a game to MVSU.Â
