Baseball Travels to the Big Easy for Date with New Orleans

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team continues its tough March portion of its schedule when they travel to face New Orleans in the first of four road games this week, Wednesday, at 4 p.m. at Maestri Field.

The month of March has produced an 8-5 record for the Golden Eagles (13-7) that has included wins over then nationally ranked Mississippi State and Tulane, Alabama, South Alabama, two wins over Louisiana, and pair of triumphs over Florida Atlantic last weekend in their C-USA opening series.
Southern Miss plays a Privateer club that holds a 12-6 record after winning two of three games at Oklahoma last weekend.
This game marks the 110th meeting between the two schools with the Golden Eagles holding a 58-51 advantage. Southern Miss has won the last two matchup between the schools as well as seven of the last nine and 19 of the last 22.
Southern Miss plays at UNO for the first time since a 15-2 victory in the 2019 season. Former Golden Eagle Hunter Slater homered three times and drove in eight runs in that affair.
This will be the first of two games between the two teams in 2022 with the other one taking place April 20 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Sophomore right-hander Blake Wehunt makes his debut for the 2022 season as he takes the mound for the Golden Eagles in the contest.
Backing Wehunt will by Dustin Dickerson who leads the way offensively for the Golden Eagles with a .320 average, along with Reece Ewing who is next at .314 with a team-best five home runs. Will McGillis leads the team in RBI with 17.
The Golden Eagles continue their road swing this weekend when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to take on league foe WKU for a three-game set.
