
Melich Leads Golden Eagles at MountainView Collegiate

SADDLEBROOKE, Ariz. -- Despite Elena Melich firing the lowest 54-hole total of her career, the Southern Miss women's golf team finished in 14that the MountainView Collegiate at The Preserve Golf Club. Melich went par-or-better all three rounds, including an even-par 72 today.
"Today the weather shifted and we didn't handle it very well," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "That being said, we put ourselves in a great position after the first two rounds and have a lot of good takeaways from this strong field."
The loaded field included 10 teams ranked inside the top-50 of Golftstat.com Rankings. The winner of the three-day event was No. 23 Texas Tech, who went 25-under par as a team.
Melich finished with five birdies over her last 18 holes and had three of those on the front nine. Her only blemish on the scorecard today was a triple bogey on the fourth hole and a bogey on the 13thhole. Junior Friend Chompitakdacha finished tied for 57thafter finishing with an eight-over 80.
Freshman Momoka Ando fired a six-over 78 today to finish tied for 61st. Both Icie Cockerham and Jacee Fields finished tied for 82nd. Cockerham carded a five-over 77 on Sunday morning, while Fields finished with a nine-over 81. Melich's career weekend bested her previous 54-hole low by five strokes that came at the Lady Red Wolves Classic earlier this season.
Southern Miss will return to action next Sunday at the Chattanooga Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. The three-day event kicks off on Sunday and will run through Monday.
