Women’s Tennis Returns Home to Take on Nicholls

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team returns to Hattiesburg after four road matches to take on Nicholls on Thursday, March 3. The Golden Eagles look to extend their home win streak to 27 matches against the Colonels.
The Black & Gold last took the court in Starkville, Miss. for a matchup against in-state foe, Mississippi State. The Golden Eagles (6-1, 1-0 C-USA) got off to a strong start taking the doubles point from the Bulldogs but were unable to ride that momentum into singles action. Southern Miss fell for the first time in the 2022 season in a 4-1 decision.
Monique Burton and Sarah Medik defeated the No. 39 doubles team in the nation by a score of 7-5 on court one against the Bulldogs. Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Alyssa Richter improved to 6-1 on the season as a doubles pair with their win against Mississippi State.
The Golden Eagles are undefeated at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex thus far in 2022 and hold a winning streak in Hattiesburg that dates back to 2018. Head coach Steve Schram has yet to lose a match at home at the helm of Southern Miss' program.
The Colonels take on the Golden Eagles riding a streak of three wins over Mississippi Valley State last weekend. Nicholls travels to Hattiesburg with a 1-2 record in road contests to open the 2022 season, with its lone away victory coming against Loyola New Orleans in the first match of the season.
The Golden Eagles and Colonels have squared off six times since 2006, with Southern Miss holding a 4-2 advantage. Southern Miss won the last matchup between the programs, a 7-0 sweep on Feb. 15, 2020, in Hattiesburg.
