ORLANDO, Fla. -- For the second time in as many matches, the Southern Miss (4-6, 0-2 C-USA) men's tennis team stormed back in dramatic fashion to grab another win at the USTA National Tennis Campus in Orlando, Fla. On Thursday afternoon, the Golden Eagles came from behind to defeat North Dakota (9-6, 2-0 Summit), 4-2.
"The team is finding the right balance and managing themselves really well in competition," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We've had a good week in Florida and hope to end it on the right note tomorrow."
Southern Miss fell behind early again, dropping the doubles point to the Fighting Hawks. North Dakota won handily at the top position against Dhruv Sunish and Pasawee Reansuwong, then grabbed a win on court three against Alexander Gima and Olimjon Nabiev to secure the doubles point. Shamirul Shahril and Antoine Audrain went unfinished on the second court.
Sunish picked up his second-straight win in singles play after going three sets with Gerhard Sullwald. Sunish won the first set and dropped the second set, then outlasted Sullwald in the third set to grab Southern Miss a much-needed point. Shahril followed suit and won in similar fashion on court two, winning the third set after dropping the second set. The match was momentarily tied at 2-2 when Gima fell to Nikita Snezhko in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.
