ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team stormed back in dramatic fashion on Monday afternoon in Orlando to defeat IUPUI, 4-3, in a neutral site match at the USTA National Tennis Campus. The Golden Eagles kicked off their spring break trip with a massive win and shook their five-match losing skid.
"The guys made some necessary adjustments today and competed extremely well," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "I thought we got into a nice pattern in singles play and then Alan [Sanson] came up with a huge win to help us secure the victory."
IUPUI (4-11, 0-0 Horizon) jumped ahead on Southern Miss (3-6, 0-2 C-USA) early in the contest by winning two of the three doubles matches to take the point. Dhruv Sunish and Pasawee Reansuwong's win on court two wasn't enough as the Jaguars also picked up wins on court one and court three. Alan Sanson and Alexander Gima dropped a close match at No. 1 doubles, while Shamirul Shahril and Antoine Audrain dropped a tie-breaking point on court three to relinquish the valuable doubles point.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start in doubles play with Shahril and Gima both losing in straight sets. Sunish, though, was able to get a needed point for Southern Miss with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Alex Jochim at the top singles position. The win was his second of the season and first in over a month. Olimnoj Nabiev followed with a win in straight sets, then Audrain followed with an equally dominant performance to even the contest at three-all.
With all eyes locked on Sanson on court four, the junior delivered after falling behind in the first set. Sanson went on to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 and picked up his third win of the year. He is now tied for the most wins by a Golden Eagle this season with three. It was also his first win in nearly a month.
Southern Miss will stay in Orlando and take on North Dakota on Thursday at 2 p.m. CST. That match will also take place at the USTA National Tennis Campus.
