Women's Tennis Sweeps McNeese State, 7-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team defeated the McNeese State Cowgirls in a 7-0 sweep on Sunday, March 13. The Golden Eagles improved to 5-0 at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex in 2022 and extended their home win streak to 28 with the victory.
The Golden Eagles (8-1, 1-0 C-USA) took care of business in doubles competition, winning the doubles point for the eighth time this season. Sarah Medik and Monique Burton defeated Natalia Ballo and Yukina Abe of McNeese, 5-3 on court one to open the match.
Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Alyssa Richter dominated the pair of Matilde Mulatero and Ariane Monlleo Sanchis, picking up the 6-0 sweep in the process. Suhana Das and Shevita Aulana toughed out a 6-4 win over Aina Domingo-Bernabe and Carlotta Romito, 6-4, as Aulana earned the first win of her collegiate career in the process.
Yazgan opened singles play for the Golden Eagles with a dominant win over Mulatero, picking up set scores of 6-0 and 6-1 en route to her sixth singles win of the season. Sarah Medik put on a similar performance on court two, dispatching Romito with a pair of 6-1 scores.
Burton gathered the third singles win of her season by retirement, while Das knocked off Ballo, 6-4, 6-1. Richter improved to 5-2 on the season, defeating Abe, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Maddison Ricardo won a hard-fought decision in the first match of her collegiate career.
"After a 10-day layoff, It was a good team win," head coach Steve Schram said. "Everyone competed at a high level. Very proud of Maddison for getting her first win as a Golden Eagle, and Shevita as well in doubles."
All but one singles match was decided in two sets, displaying Southern Miss' dominance throughout the match. The Golden Eagles improved to a combined singles record of 30-9, and their doubles mark moved to 18-8.

The Golden Eagles next take on Missouri State Bears on Wednesday, March 16 at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 11 a.m. and admission is free.
