HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team heads to Mobile, Ala. for a matchup against the South Alabama Jaguars on Thursday, March 17. The Golden Eagles ride a two-match win streak into the match and look to improve to 2-1 on the road this season.
Southern Miss heads to Mobile following two successful home matches against Nicholls and McNeese State. The Golden Eagles (8-1, 1-0 C-USA) swept both matches, which took place on March 3 and March 13, by scores of 7-0. The Black & Gold extended its home win streak to 28 matches, which dates back to 2018.
The Golden Eagles have been stellar in doubles competition, winning the first point of the match in all but one contest this season. Monique Burton and Sarah Medik defeated the then-No. 39 pair in the nation on Feb. 26 against Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. and have won just under 70 percent of doubles contests.
South Alabama comes into Thursday's matchup with a record of 11-2, with a stellar 9-1 mark at the Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts this season. The Jaguars have won their last three matches against the likes of USF, Louisiana and ULM.
Southern Miss and South Alabama have faced off nine times since 2012, with the Jaguars holding an 8-1 advantage. The Golden Eagles won the last meeting between the programs, a close 4-3 victory at home on Feb. 26, 2021.
In the last meeting between the teams, singles wins from Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, Suhana Das, Medik and Burton propelled the Golden Eagles to a monumental victory for the program. The Black & Gold travel to Mobile for the first time since Feb. 23, 2019, when the Jaguars won a 4-2 decision at home.
