DALLAS – Southern Miss managed just one run in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, losing to host Dallas Baptist 3-1 and 2-0 at Horner Ballpark in non-conference baseball action.
The Golden Eagles (10-5) dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.
In the opening game of the twinbill, the Patriots (8-6) scored their game's total runs in the second frame. With one out Luke Heefner doubled to right-center field. George Specht then got hit by a pitch before Jaxon Holder walked. Leadoff hitter Jace Grady followed by driving in a pair of runs with a double to right field and Blayne Jones completed the scoring with an RBI groundout.
The Golden Eagles offense managed five hits and four walks in the affair, but left a runner on in six different innings, while also hitting into three double plays during the contest and killing at least two late-inning threats.
Christopher Sargent registered the only Golden Eagle run on the day with a leadoff homer to center to open the ninth. It was his third of the year.
Jacob Meador limited Southern Miss to three hits and four walks over 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 3-0. Chandler Arnold threw the final frame to capture his first save of the year.
On the other side, USM starter Ben Ethridge gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2. Four Golden Eagle pitchers combined to give up a season-high five walks in the opening contest.
In the nightcap, Hunter Riggins pitched solidly again for the visitors, giving up six hits and no walks with three strikeouts. He surrendered his lone run in the fifth inning. With two outs, Andrew Benefield singled and then scored one batter later on a Holder double to right.
Riggins suffered the loss and fell to 3-1.
The Patriots posted its other run in the eighth with a two-out triple from Miguel Santos, whose fly ball down the rightfield line fell just fair and past a diving Carson Paetow allowing the insurance run to score.
The Golden Eagles managed five hits in the contest as Rodrigo Montenegro led the way with two singles.
Luke Eldred went seven strong innings for the Patriots and gave up no runs on four hits with four strikeouts to earn the victory, improving to 2-0. Brady Rose threw the final two frames and gave up one hit and fanned one to collect his first save.
The two team complete the series with a 1 p.m., contest Sunday.
