HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss men's tennis team opens its home slate with Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles (0-1, 0-1 C-USA) and Gamecocks (1-0, 0-0 ASUN) will serve from the Southern Miss Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
"We have a good team in Jacksonville State coming this weekend and we have spent the last two weeks preparing for Saturday's match," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "We showed a lot of fight at Middle Tennessee, and I am proud of how the guys have responded in practice.
"It's always a privilege to play at home and we have had great success on our courts. We hope to continue that success this season"
Southern Miss fell in its season-opening match at Middle Tennessee two weeks ago. The Blue Raiders, who are the two-time defending Conference USA Champions, jumped out to a quick lead with the doubles point before winning 7-0. Dhruv Sunish and Shamirul Sharil were able to pick up a win in doubles play after besting Francisco Rocha and Oskar Poulsen, 6-2.
The Gamecocks head to Hattiesburg with one win under their belts after edging UT Chattanooga, 4-3. They dropped the doubles point before storming back in singles play with wins on court two, three, four, and six. Vanja Dobrnjac was named the first ASUN Player of the Week in program history after winning on court three to complete the comeback against the Mocs.
The Golden Eagles have won their last 10 home openers and the last loss came against Jacksonville State in 2011. Engineer has never lost a home opener in his nine seasons at the helm of the Black and Gold.
