HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- By way of a 4-1 win over Jacksonville State (1-1, 0-0 ASUN) at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon, the Southern Miss men's tennis team won its 11th-straight home opener. The Golden Eagles (1-1, 0-1 C-USA) also notched their first win of the season and the ninth home-opening win under Zubin Engineer.
"I am very proud of the way the guys bounced back after the last match," Engineer said. "I thought we came out strong in doubles and carried that same energy into singles. Chris and Olimjon both had to battle deep into their matches, but both were able to get big wins for us."
Dhruv Sunish and Shamirul Shahril got Southern Miss off to a strong start in doubles play as the pair walked away with a 6-3 win over Joaquin Vallejo and Aljaz Kaplja. Alexander Gima and Antoine Audrain kept the train rolling as they secured the doubles point for the Golden Eagles with a 6-4 win on court three. Engineer's second pairing of Alan Sanson and Pasawee Reansuwong were on their way to a win on court two but went unfinished after the point was secured.
With the doubles point in hand, Southern Miss added another point to the score column after Sunish won in straight sets at the top singles spot. The fifth-year senior knocked off Vallejo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Olimjon Nabiev picked up another win for the Golden Eagles after he dropped the first set to Kaplja. He bounced back in the second set and won 6-4, then easily won the third set via a 6-1 score.
The Gamecocks picked up a win on court four after Alan Sanson was forced to retire in the third set. Christopher Cahour secured the win for Southern Miss in a three-set thriller on court six. Cahour cruised to a 6-0 win in the third set after dropping the second set to Jordi Blanchar.
With four points and the win secured, Audrain and Shahril both went unfinished. Audrain was leading in the third set on court five, and Shahril was up in the second set on court two.
The Golden Eagles now turnaround to play UT Chattanooga in Hattiesburg on Saturday, Feb. 12. First serve from the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
