HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A pair of Southern Miss pitchers limited Jacksonville State to five hits while the offense recorded double-digit hits for the fourth time this season in a 5-1 series-securing victory Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles improved to 5-1 on the year, while the Gamecocks fell to 0-6. The two teams complete the three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m.
Hunter Riggins and Landon Harper combined to fan eight batters and allow one walk in the contest. Harper came on in the sixth after Riggins gave up a leadoff double in 1-1 contest.
"I was proud of the way (Riggins) went out and competed," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "He gave us five innings and gave it away to (Landon) Harper with a runner at second after a leadoff double and Harper was able to pitch out of that. It was a huge momentum swing for us. We had just gone up 2-1 and we needed that shutdown inning really bad. Jacksonville State looked like they were going to tie it up again like they did after Paetow's home run, but Harper did an excellent job covering it the rest of the way."
Riggins went five-plus innings and allowed all five hits and the walk while fanning four to get the victory and improve to 2-0. Harper threw the final four innings, retiring all 12 batters he faced – with four strikeouts – to earn his first save.
Carson Paetow put the Golden Eagles on the board first with a solo home run to leftfield to open the third, his first of the year, to give the home squad a 1-0 advantage.
The Gamecocks tied the game on a TJ Reeves run-scoring single in the fourth, before the Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the fifth. Gabe Montenegro opened the frame with his 46th-career double and then scored one batter later on a single by Dustin Dickerson and Southern Miss never relinquished the lead.
Will McGillis helped increase the lead to 3-1 with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly and the Golden Eagles got a solo home run by Reece Ewing, his second of the year while extending his hitting streak to six games. Slade Wilks then doubled and scored on a McGillis single one batter later.
The Golden Eagles recorded 11 hits as Wilks led the way with three, while Dickerson added a pair.
