HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Isaih Moore finished with at least 10 points for the fifth straight game on Monday night, but the Southern Miss men's basketball team ended its four-game homestand with a 74-60Â loss to Marshall.Â
"Here's the deal -- I learned this from coach Turk -- always find something positing to say," said head coach Jay Ladner. "The positive is that our guys didn't quit and they continued to play in the second half. The negative, though, is we looked unprepared coming out of the gates tonight."
Marshall (11-17 4-11 C-USA) jumped to a 10-point lead, then bumped it up to 15 at the 10-minute mark with a jumper from Darius George. The lead grew to 20 two separate times before the Golden Eagles (6-21, 1-13 C-USA) scored, but Goran Miladinovic pushed the lead back to 20 with three seconds left in the first half. Moore went into the break with 11 points and six rebounds to lead all Golden Eagles at the time.Â
Southern Miss attempted to mount a comeback in the second half by way of an 11-0 run to cut the Herd lead to just nine. Junior Tyler Stevenson slammed home a pair of monster dunks to get the Reed Green faithful on their feet, but Marshall answered right back with a three-pointer. It was its first basket in nearly eight minutes and pushed the lead back to 12. Walyn Napper cut hard to the rim to spark momentum for Southern Miss shortly after, and Stevenson cut the deficit back to nine after sinking a free throw, but the Herd had another answer for the Southern Miss run.Â
Marshall would then push its lead to 17 before ultimately closing out the 14-point win. The Herd knocked down seven three-pointers, while the Golden Eagles connected on five of their 18 attempts. Southern Miss snagged 41 rebounds to outrebound Marshall by six, but its 13 offensive rebounds were the fourth-most in a single game this season. Moore, Napper, and Stevenson each had three offensive boards.Â
Moore's 19 points was a team-high, and Stevenson joined him in double figures with 13 points. Stevenson secured the 17th double-double of his career by adding 10 rebounds. Jaron Pierre, Jr. added nine points in his return to the lineup after missing the UTEP game. Napper finished with seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists.Â
Southern Miss will hit the road for a pair of C-USA games next weekend. The trip starts at North Texas on Thursday (7 p.m.), then concludes at Rice on Saturday (6 p.m.).
