SAN ANTONIO – Converting 21 turnovers into 19 points, the Southern Miss women's basketball team used a suffocating defensive effort to roll past UTSA, 66-50, on Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
"We had a lot of really solid play from a lot of different players," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "Brikayla Gray really put us on her back in the first quarter and it probably would have been a different story had she not. Lauren Gross was in on the action on every rebound trying to pursue the ball. Rose Warren played really, really well. It was a combination of a lot of different things that got us the win tonight."
Gray led the Lady Eagles (16-8, 8-5 C-USA) with 14 points, going for the first seven of the game, to set the tone for the Black and Gold. She was joined in double-figures by Melyia Grayson who finished with 10 points on a 5-of-9 effort from the field. In total, 10 different players entered the scoring column on the night.
On the first shot for Southern Miss, Gray knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to spark the offense, and later broke a scoring drought, cutting to the rim for an easy layup to put the Lady Eagles back on top midway through the first period. Fess Hawkins entered the action late in the stanza, making an immediate impact, with an assist and bucket to put USM up by two after the first ten minutes.
The Lady Eagles opened the second quarter on a mission, holding UTSA (5-19, 2-11 C-USA) to just 1-of-12 from the field, and opened the quarter on a 17-0 run. A barrage of 3-pointers, including back-to-back from Rose Warren, helped USM all put the Roadrunners away going into the locker room with a 20-point advantage.
"The positivity in our locker room right now is the key," said Warren postgame. "It just feels like we're together as a group right now, and we feel really good about where we're at."
Out of halftime, Southern Miss pounded the paint, scoring 8 of their 12 points in the frame inside of the lane, including four each from Grayson and Daishai Almond. The Lady Eagles allowed UTSA to make just 22.7-percent of their shots through 30 minutes of action to lead by 22 entering the final quarter.
The Lady Eagles stretched their lead out to as many as 25 in the final stanza, before the Roadrunners ended the game on a 9-0 run against the Black and Gold reserves.
Southern Miss continues to hold the lead in the western division, traveling to El Paso, for a showdown with UTEP on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT.
