HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss men's tennis team will go for its third-straight win at home on Friday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles play host to Lamar at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled for 2Â p.m.
"We're playing really well right now and I think we have a great opportunity on Friday to keep that up," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "This will be a good test before we host our second Conference USA match on Sunday against UAB."
The Golden Eagles (2-1, 0-1 C-USA) are coming off back-to-back home wins against Jacksonville State and Chattanooga. Against the Mocs last Saturday, Shamirul Shahril notched his first win as a Golden Eagles, cruising to a 6-3, 6-4 win against Simon Labbe at No. 2 singles. Shahril and Dhruv Sunish also pushed their doubles record to 3-0 with a win that clinched the doubles point for Southern Miss.
Antoine Audrain is finding his stride after storming back to win in three sets against Peyton Gatti on Saturday. The win clinched the match for the Golden Eagles and extended their home winning streak to two in a row. Alan Sanson was another Golden Eagle that fought off defeat against the Mocs, coming all the way back from a first-set loss to win in three. Sanson's win was the first of the season and moved him to 1-2.
"My teammates and myself have been proving people wrong every match," Shahril said. "We won't stop until we're at the top."
Lamar (5-3, 0-0 WAC) has won four-straight, including a pair of shutout wins against Alcorn State last Saturday. The Cardinals dropped back-to-back matches to Big 12 power Oklahoma State and Southern Miss' Conference USA foe Rice. Daniel Sancho Arbizu is the top dog for Lamar, owning a 4-3 record on court one. Martin Garcia-Ripoll leads Lamar in wins at six. He's earned wins on court four, five, and six. Lamar is a combined 12-4 at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles position, but just 2-6 at the No. 1 slot.
The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround following Friday's match, as they face C-USA rival UAB on Sunday morning.
