HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team fell in dramatic fashion to Lamar at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex on Friday evening by a 4-3 score. The Cardinals (6-3, 0-0 WAC) snapped the Golden Eagles' (2-2, 0-1 C-USA) unbeaten streak at home and handed the home team their second loss of the season.
"It was tough condition today with the wind and cold temperatures, but I thought we battled through it fairly well," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We have a day to get ready for UAB and that one is a big conference match."
Southern Miss dropped all three doubles matches for the first time this season. It was also Dhruv Sunish's and Shamirul Shahril's first loss as the top pair this season.
The Golden Eagles attempted to make a comeback in singles after Olimjon Nabiev, Antoine Audrain, and Alan Sanson all grabbed wins. Nabiev and Audrain each dropped the first set before storming back to win the final two sets. Nabiev's win moved him to 2-0, and Audrain moved to 2-1. Sanson won his second-straight match, but this week it came in straight sets. The win moved Sanson to 2-2 on the season.
Lamar was able to hang on and secure the match win with a trio of victories in singles. Christopher Cahour, Sunish, and Shahril all lost in straight sets.
Southern Miss will regroup quickly and host UAB on Sunday in a Conference USA battle. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
