
Golden Eagles Continue Historic NIVC Run at Boston College

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Southern Miss women's volleyball continues its run in the National Invitational Volleyball Championships on Saturday, Dec. 10 when it travels to Boston College. The Golden Eagles and Eagles (22-13, 7-11 ACC) will meet at 3 p.m. CST at the Margot Connell Recreation Center with a spot in the NIVC Finals on the line.
Southern Miss (21-11, 10-6 SBC) advanced after taking down Western Carolina in five sets on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles found themselves needing to win the fourth set to keep their season alive. They did just that and then took control in the fifth set to notch Southern Miss' first 21-win season since 2016. Mia Wesley and Cara Atkinson combined for 37 kills in the win.Â
Kenzie Smith went for 56 assists, nine digs, seven kills and three blocks. Smith's 50-plus assist performance was the sixth of the season for the Manhattan, Kans. native. It was the third-highest assists output of the season after posting 61 assists against South Alabama and 59 against Stephen F. Austin. Megan Harris tied her career-high in digs after finishing with 32 to lead all players. Reagen Leinen joined Wesley and Atkinson with 10 kills and a .409 hitting percentage.Â
Scouting the NIVC Bracket
The 32-team field is down to four after Drake and Davidson advanced to the semifinals last night. Drake took down Pacific in three sets and Davidson downed UT Rio Grande Valley in three sets. The finals will be Dec. 11-13 on the campus of one of the final four teams.Â
Scouting the Eagles
Boston College cruised through the first two rounds as it swept Buffalo and St. John's in Chestnut Hill, Mass. It took five sets to beat Xavier in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night. Silvia Ianeselli (15), Izzy Clavenna (14), Alayna Crabtree (14) and Katrina Jensen (10) all recorded at least 14 kills in the win. Clavenna leads Boston College with 295 kills in 126 sets played. Grace Penn's 778 assists puts her as one of three Eagles with 100-plis assists.Â
