
Volleyball Falls in Four Games to Boston College in NIVC Semifinals

BOSTON – Southern Miss' run in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship came to an end Saturday afternoon after dropping a 3-1 decision (25-21, 16-25, 27-25, 25-16) at Boston College in the tournament's semifinal.
The season ended for the Golden Eagles at 21-12, while BC (23-13) advances to the championship match against either Drake or Davidson early next week.
Mia Wesley led the Golden Eagles with 19 kills and 19 digs, while Cailin Demps added 12 kills and Cara Atkinson totaled 10.
Southern Miss opened the match with an ace by Kenzie Smith, but eventually found themselves down a point away from losing the opening game at 24-17 before rallying for four consecutive points – kills by Mia Wesley and Cailin Demps with a BC attack error and another Smith ace – before BC ended the set on a Alayna Crabtree kill.
The second game started out 7-7, before the Golden Eagles ran off four straight points. A BC attack error and a block before two Wesley kills helped the visitors jump out in the set. Wesley then keyed a 4-0 run to end the game with a kill and ace to even the match.
Southern Miss had a chance to take a lead in the match during a tightly contested third set, which included five lead changes and 19 ties, as no team jumping out to a lead greater than two points.
Southern Miss led 24-22 but a BC kill and then a block tied the game. BC then had three game-point chances, but Southern Miss scored each time, before Crabtree collected a kill on the fourth opportunity to win the set for the home squad.
The fourth set saw BC saving its best hitting attack of the match as they enjoyed a .357 hitting percentage with 14 kills and only four errors in 28 attempts. BC scored 10 of the set's first 15 points to seal the event.
