HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lady Eagle basketball returns home to defend their undefeated home record against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Tipoff from Reed Green Coliseum is set for 2 p.m.
Last Time Out
Southern Miss (5-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) last hit the hardwood in Homewood, Ala. against Samford, falling 71-59 to the Bulldogs.
Despite shooting more efficiently than the Bulldogs overall and from beyond the arc, Southern Miss proved unable to overcome early fouls. Samford attempted 20 free throws to Southern Miss' 10. The Bulldogs converted 15; Southern Miss, just six.
After a close first half, Samford's floor efficiency outpaced Southern Miss with quick whistles placing Southern Miss in the bonus in both the third and fourth quarters.
Domonique Davis' (DeRidder, La. // LSU) fourth quarter heroics were in vain as Samford answered each make. Her 17 points were the most of any Lady Eagle.
Femi Funeus (Plantation, Fla. // Seton Hall) grabbed a season-high and game-leading nine rebounds as she continues to make her return after two years of injury.
The Alabama Series
Southern Miss and Alabama have faced off seven times since first meeting in 1980.
The Lady Eagles took the first two games and three of the first four before Alabama began a three-game winning streak.
Southern Miss' last victory over the Crimson Tide came on Dec. 3, 1988 in overtime at Reed Green Coliseum. The Black & Gold are 2-1 all-time under the roof of RGC against the Tide.
Lady Eagle head coach Joye Lee-McNelis is 0-3 against the Crimson & White at Southern miss and is 1-5 overall thanks to a 1-2 record at Memphis.
Although McNelis and Alabama head coach Kristy Curry combine for 990 wins in their career and over 1,600 games, the two have squared off just once in last year's meeting in Tuscaloosa.
Scouting the Crimson Tide
Alabama (6-2, 0-0 SEC) enters the Sunday shootout already in midseason form. The first NCAA NET ratings placed the Crimson tide at 30th overall.
Curry's crew can shoot from just about anywhere and convert as their 47.8 field goal percentage indicates, which is the 17th-best rate in the nation.
The Tide has more than embraced the long ball, making an average of 8.1 per game on 36.9 percent shooting.
Alabama is led by Brittany Davis, a member of last year's All-SEC Second Team. Davis paces the attack with 16.4 points per game through eight games. Eight Tide players average at least five points per game with four averaging eight or more.
Davis' wingman is Megan Abrams, dropping 10.3 points per contest.
The squad defends the rim just as well as they attack it, averaging 4.5 blocks per game.
