HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A 13-0 Alabama run in the second quarter proved too much for Southern Miss to handle as the Lady Eagles fell at Reed Green Coliseum for the first time this season, 56-47. Southern Miss hits the road for a four-game stretch before returning to Hattiesburg on Jan. 5.
Tale of the Tape
After winning the jump ball, Alabama (7-2, 0-0 SEC) nailed their first long ball of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Three pointers proved to be the difference for the Tide with Alabama connecting on 12 of their 30 attempts from behind the arc while Southern Miss (5-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) finished 1-of-10.
Southern Miss, in a true clash of styles, pounded the paint, feeding Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss. // Hattiesburg HS) and Femi Funeus (Plantation, Fla. // Seton Hall) under the basket. The duo ended the day with a combined 20 points and 12 rebounds.
After a tight first quarter, Southern Miss led 12-8 and eventually extended that lead to a six-point margin before Alabama called a timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Crimson Tide took to the floor with a new passion, marching towards a 13-point run to end the frame up 24-20.
The Tide never surrendered the lead, eventually outlasting Southern Miss to hold on to the final 56-47 decision.
One bright spot, Southern Miss' defense held the Crimson Tide to their lowest point total of the season. Alabama entered the game averaging 76.8 points per contest.
