HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss overcame an early scare from William Carey thanks to Domonique Davis' 25-point second-half performance. Davis finished with a career-high 36 points and eight rebounds to push the shorthanded Lady Eagles to an 81-58 victory.
"William Carey is a fantastic program with an outstanding coach in Tracy English," said 19th-year head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "Finally, our defense generated some offense. Dom got hot and started going, but it was truly generated from our defense. Asia Broughton proved to be the difference maker on the defensive side, which is fantastic since we haven't gotten much of her at practice."
The Game
Early struggles plagued the Lady Eagles (1-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) once again as they fell behind the visiting William Carey Crusaders (1-1, 0-0 SSAC) in the first quarter. At one point, Carey held a game-high 12-point lead over the Black & Gold late in the first and led the Lady Eagles 19-11 after one.
The Lady Eagles managed just 25 percent shooting in the opening frame with Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La. // LSU) leading the squad with six points.
The Crusaders continued to press hard in the second quarter, falling behind just once before retaking the lead seconds later. Southern Miss outscored William Carey 19-16, but still trailed 35-30 heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter proved to be all Southern Miss as the Lady Eagles stormed back to take a six-point lead at the end of the quarter. Davis poured on 18 points and was 6-of-10 from the floor in the period.
Asia Broughton (Houston, Texas // Cypress Ridge HS) ignited the Lady Eagles' charge after poking a ball loose and collecting a free throw on the other end.
On Broughton's missed second attempt, Lani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y. // Northwest Florida State) grabbed the board and dished the ball out to Rose Warren (Puckett, Miss. // Puckett HS) who drilled one from beyond the arc.
The Lady Eagles ran William Carey off the floor in the final four minutes thanks to a 12-0 scoring run and 55.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
The final stanza proved to be all Lady Eagles as the home-standing squad dumped 25 points on the Crusaders to escape with an 81-58 win.
Davis finished 12-of-25 overall and 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. She also shot 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Her 36 points are tied for the tenth-most all-time and are the most points scored in a game since Brittny Norris' 35 against Marshall on Feb. 2, 2017.
Davis' eight rebounds were also a career-high water mark.
Asia Broughton had a career day as well, putting up nine points on a 3-of-7 shooting performance off the bench. Her 15 rebounds were a game-high across both teams and shattered her career high.
Lani Cornfield made her Lady Eagle debut one to be remembered after a 13-point, seven-assist performance. Southern Miss finished +29 with Cornfield on the floor, the best of any player on the day.
Southern Miss now leads the all-time series 19-1 over William Carey.
