Lady Eagles Fall in Shootout to Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Southern Miss' shooting proved unable to outlast homestanding Valparaiso as the Lady Eagles fell 72-65 in their first road match of the season.
"Hats off to Valpo and Mary Evans," said 19th-year Lady Eagle head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "They shot the cover off of it and we did not guard it well. We came into today planning on mixing up our defensive schemes every few possessions and every time we tried zone they shot the cover off the ball and we didn't.
We looked at the shot chart at halftime and it was a bunch of shots down in the protected zone that we just didn't connect on. Our players were mentally frustrated today and it showed. Overall, this game is a great learning experience for us, especially with the tremendous growth we saw from Ashja Leake, she was truly a game changer today."
Despite attempting 10 more field goals than the Beacons (2-0, 0-0 Missouri Valley), Southern Miss (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) was unable to overcome the unfriendly confines of the Athletics-Recreation Center and Valpo's hot-shooting.
Ashja Leake (Cibolo, Texas // Steele HS) began a career performance and the day's scoring with a second chance layup 1:07 into the first quarter.
Valpo responded immediately with an eight-point run to take a 10-4 lead going into the first quarter media timeout and finished the quarter still ahead by a score of 14-12.
As the second quarter drew to a close, Southern Miss battled to take a 27-26 lead thanks to Domonique Davis' (DeRidder, La. // LSU) 10 points and Ashja Leake's six. Leake and Asia Broughton (Houston, Texas // Cypress Ridge HS) brought down six boards each in the first half.
The two squads fought a back-and-forth battle in the third quarter, with Valpo finishing on top, 48-44.
Southern Miss, unable to grab the lead, came within one point of tying after two Davis free throws. Valpo shot 58.3 percent from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to tack on 24 points in the final quarter.
Davis led all scorers with 26 points while Ashja Leake grabbed 10 boards—split evenly between offensive and defensive glass—and tacked on 11 points for her first career double-double. Her points and rebounds were both career highs.
