Ignatiuk Advances to Finals at CCB Collegiate Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- At the CCB Collegiate Invitational this past weekend in Birmingham, Ala., the Southern Miss men's tennis team was paced by newcomer Taras Ignatiuk who made the championship round in the Houndstooth Singles Draw.
Ignatiuk started his weekend with a dominant win over Birmingham Southern's Will Dotson. He took the match via a 6-2, 6-3 score. The Belarus native then knocked off Vojtech Podzemny in a wild three-set match. After dropping the first set to the UAB player, Ignatiuk stormed back to take both of the final two sets by a 7-6(4). In the semifinals, Ignatiuk beat Sunbelt Conference opponent Juan Accossatto (South Alabama), 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, to secure himself a spot in the championship match. Despite the strong weekend up to that point, Ignatiuk fell to Belmont's Riccardo Trione in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles also received a pair of wins from Shamirul Shahril in the Crimson Singles Draw. The veteran picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(8) win against Roman Postalka of UAB on Friday afternoon. He then defeated JB Pickard (Samford), 7-6(3), 6-2, on Sunday.
"This was a great event for our team and for everyone to get quality match play," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We are starting to see their strengths and patterns of play. Congratulations to Taras Ignatiuk for fighting his way to the finals playing and through 10 singles sets in three days."
The CCB Collegiate Invitational marked the final Fall tournament for the Golden Eagles before they open regular season play in late January.
