HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss returns to Oxford, Miss. for the first time since Dec. 12, 2017 and will be looking for their seventh win against the rival Ole Miss Rebels. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Sandy & John Black Pavilion at Ole Miss.
Last Time Out
The Lady Eagles (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) enter Wednesday's match off a nail-biting 72-65 loss at Valparaiso. Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La. // LSU) tallied 26 points and four rebounds and Ashja Leake (Cibolo, Texas // Steele HS) had a career day, finishing with a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
Valpo stayed efficient throughout the match as they finished 25-of-55 from the floor while Southern Miss posted a 24-of-65 mark.
The nail in the coffin came in the form of missed Lady Eagle free throws as Southern Miss posted an abysmal 59.1 percent from the line.
The Rebel Review
Ole Miss (3-0, 0-0 SEC) returns to the Sandy & John Black Pavilion after a successful bout at Little Rock on Sunday where they ran the Trojans off the court en route to a 58-40 win.
The Rebels have one of the nation's stingiest scoring defenses, allowing an average of 52.3 points per game—the highest mark came against Kennesaw State in the season opener in the form of a 72-60 win.
Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin is in her fifth season at Ole Miss and sports a deceiving 57-66 overall record with Rebels as her squad finished last season 23-9 and made the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Yo & Co. hold an 15-game winning streak over nonconference foes and eight-straight at home.
Ole Miss replaces much of last season's production as the team only returned five from last year. The returning group included SEC Sixth Woman of the Year Angel Baker, who doubles as the team's leading scorer through three games.
The rest of the roster filled itself out by a flurry of transfers, six in total, all from power five schools.
The Ole Miss Series
Southern Miss and Ole Miss meet for the 25 time in each program's history.
The overall series lies heavily in Ole Miss' favor as the Rebels lead 18-6, but in matchups played after the invention of the world wide web, Southern Miss' margin is much slimmer at 3-5.
The series began at Reed Green Coliseum on Jan. 8, 1976, where Ole Miss took a 63-46 decision. Southern Miss earned their first win on Dec. 10, 1977.
The two schools played regularly through the late 70s as members of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) prior to the adoption of the NCAA by both schools.
Southern Miss won the last matchup in 2019, 59-53 and are just 2-9 in Oxford and 0-1 in the Sandy & John Black Pavilion at Ole Miss.
