HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Thirteen different Golden Eagles scored as the Southern Miss men's basketball team cruised to an 84-54 win against Delta State in Monday's exhibition game in Hattiesburg.
Junior guard Mo Arnold (Picayune, Miss./Picayune HS) led all Southern Miss players with 12 points. The Black and Gold got off to a fast start via an Austin Crowley (West Point, Miss/OIe Miss) step-back jumper less than a minute in. As both teams started to settle in, Donovan Ivory (Kaukauna, Wisc./Green Bay) drained a 3-pointer that started a 19-0 run over a six-minute period -- it would be the largest run by either team. Ivory put the Golden Eagles ahead by 13 during that stretch after taking a ball that whipped around the perimeter through each Golden Eagle and fittingly drained another three-point in the corner.
Denijay Harris (Columbus, Miss./Southwest Mississippi CC) got the Reed Green faithful out of their seats after slamming home a Crowley alley oop pass to extend the Southern Miss lead even more. Harris would finish with six points on 3-of-5 shooting. The Golden Eagles shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the first half as they held a 46-27 advantage at the break.
Southern Miss' lead continued to balloon as Arnold hit a quick 3-pointer out of the break to push the lead to 22. Relentless defense and timely shooting would eventually put the Golden Eagles ahead by 27 with 13:23 to play in the game. Transfers Neftali Alvarez (Catano, Puerto Rico/Mercer) and Felipe Haase (Osorno, Chile/Mercer) combined for 14 points and seven assists. Haase, a Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team player, finished 4-of-6 from the floor.
Ivory flashed his tools en route to finishing with 11 points. As a team, Southern Miss shot 47.6 percent from the floor over the course of the game. Newcomer Victor Hart (Miami, Fla./FIU) finished in double figures with 10 points off the bench. Hart's bench production was part of 41 total points from guys coming off the Golden Eagle sideline.
DeAndre Pinckney (Carol City, Fla./Broward CC) finished with six points and nine rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles on the glass. They hauled down 38 rebounds compared to Delta State's 35. The Statesmen were paced by Sam Smith's 19 points and six rebounds.
Southern Miss will open the regular season on Monday, Nov. 7 against William Carey. Tip off at Reed Green Coliseum is scheduled for 7 p.m.
