LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team picked up 18 wins this weekend at The Cajun Classic as Alexander Gima secured a singles title to lead the way in Lafayette, La.
"The team competed well this weekend against some of the best teams in the Southern Region," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "The focus was on executing their strengths and patterns of play and this was a great opportunity to get better."
Gima started his weekend in the No. 3 Singles Flight with a 6-2, 7-6(4) win against Naithaolin from Tyler Junior College on Friday afternoon. The senior then matches up with Nicholls' Griffin Babineaux in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Babineaux took the first set before Gima stormed back to win the second set, 6-1, and then the third set in a tiebreaker.
The Golden Eagles wrapped up Saturday with Gima ousting Kacper Dworak from the Ragin' Cajuns in the semifinals. Gima won that match in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-1. Sunday's championship match pitted the Romanian against Faiz Nasyam from Tyler Jr. College. Gima wasted no time in the morning match and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win to take home the Flight No. 3 Championship.
In doubles play, Shamirul Shahril and Pasawee Reansuwong posted a 2-1 record for Southern Miss. The other three doubles pairing each recorded at least one win over the weekend. Olimjon Nabiev competed with a player from Louisiana.
Dakotah Bobo grabbed two wins in singles play, while Shahril also added two wins. In total, Southern Miss had 13 singles wins with all nine players picking up at least one win.
