HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team looks to get over the .500 mark when they travel to face Texas State, Saturday, Oct. 22, at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas.
Game time is set for 4 p.m., and can be streamed live via ESPN+, as well as be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield.
The Golden Eagles (3-3 overall, 1-1 Sun Belt) enter the game having won three of their last four contests, including a 20-19 victory at home over Arkansas State last weekend. Southern Miss rallied from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to register the school's first-ever Sun Belt win.
The defense limited the Red Wolves to 286 yards of total offense, including just 50 rushing yards, as the Nasty Bunch held an opponent under 300 yards for the second time this season. Southern Miss allows just 367.7 yards per contest in 2022, ranking 58th in the country.
This season, the Golden Eagle defense posted four sacks for the fifth game in a row to average 3.67 per contest, which ranks No. 6 in the nation. Their tackle for losses of 8.2 per game ranks No. 7 nationally. Southern Miss also ranks nationally in interceptions at No. 20 with eight, along with No. 3 with their three defensive touchdowns.
Malik Shorts paces Southern Miss with 47 tackles, followed closely by Santrell Latham who has 43 through the first six games. Dominic Quewon leads the team in both tackles for loss (seven) and sacks (six) with his sack total ranking No. 4 in the country.
On offense, Zach Wilcke makes his sixth consecutive start at quarterback marking the most starts at this position by a true freshman since Nick Mullens had the same number in 2013. Wilcke has thrown for 792 yards on 72-of-125 throws with six touchdowns and six interceptions. He has thrown at least one touchdown in all five of his starts.
Wilcke's biggest receiving target has been senior Jason Brownlee, who leads the squad in receptions with 27 for 370 yards and four touchdowns. Brownlee, who has 17 career touchdown catches, needs one more to tie Korey Robertson for fifth-most in a Golden Eagle career.
Frank Gore, Jr., continues to lead the Southern Miss rushing attack, having posted 477 rushing yards for an average of 5.0 per rush and 79.5 per game. His 539 all-purpose yards, good for 89.8 total yards per contest, tops the squad as well.
The Golden Eagles meet Texas State (3-4, 1-2) for the third time in 10 seasons, with the first meeting happening at The Rock in Hattiesburg during the 2013 campaign and Southern Miss falling late in the 22-15 contest. The two teams met again, this time in San Marcos, with the Golden Eagles capturing a 56-50 offensive shootout in 2015. Behind Jalen Richard's 230 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Southern Miss evened the series with the 106 points tying for the most combined points in the school's history.
Following the trip to Texas State, the Golden Eagles return home with a Thursday night, Oct. 27, showdown with longtime foe Louisiana for a ESPN2 national broadcast affair. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
