HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team erased a three-stroke deficit over the final 18 holes and sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) shot an even-par 72 Tuesday as the Golden Eagles captured both the individual and team titles at the Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Ark.
The Golden Eagles won their second tournament of the fall as well as enjoyed its second individual medalist honors with Dupuy capturing his first collegiate tournament with an eight-under 208, one stroke better than Mattias Varjun of VCU.
Southern Miss shot a final-round, five-over 293 to end the 54-hole event at the par-72, 7,115-yard Chenal Golf Club with a one-over 865. They defeated VCU (869) by four strokes and UTEP by nine in the 16-team tournament field.
"Chenal showed its teeth today with the cold temps and greens firming out," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "The course played much tougher, but our guys played some great golf to hang in there. Our group has continued to show their ability to battle through adversity week after week. Ryan Dupuy has put himself in contention to win many times since he stepped foot on campus and to see him finally win this week is special. Overall, another successful week for our guys and we look to keep the momentum rolling in the Bahamas next week."
Dupuy led the field with three eagles over the two days and finished with a 4.00 stroke average on all the par 5s in the event, which was the best of the 90-player field.
Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) collected the best round for the Golden Eagles with a one-under 71 to end with an even par 216 and tie for eighth.
The Golden Eagles had a third Top-20 finisher in Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) as he fired a final-round 73 for a one-over 217 to finish tied for 14th.
Junior Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 41st after shooting a 77 over his final round for a 226, while Tommy Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) – who played as an individual – carded a 78 to end his tournament at 232, tying him for 66th. Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) rounded out the scoring with a 241, after finishing with a final-round 84 to tie for 84th place.
The Golden Eagles complete the fall portion of the slate Oct. 28-30 at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational at the Ocean Golf Club in Nassau.
